Position Summary

The National Health Corps member serving with Legal Council for Health Justice will leverage resources to expand our capacity to remove legal barriers to health for low-income patients at the agency’s Medical-Legal Partnerships (MLP). Our MLPs bring the attorney and medical provider together, in the medical center setting, to address health harming legal issues confronted by our clients. This initiative will increase the availability and delivery of free legal services to people from highly vulnerable populations such as those impacted and at increased risk of HIV, diabetes, chronic high blood pressure and Hepatitis C.  Through these efforts, it is our goal to address the social determinants of health through a medical-legal lens. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

The major duties of the Member include, serving alongside the MLP attorney to increase our ability to provide legal services to address health harming legal needs. This member will support the Howard Brown Health Legal Clinic and the Christian Community Health Center (CCHC) Legal Clinic. In this capacity they will:

  • Increase outreach, education, and engagement for our most vulnerable clients and those who traditionally experience discrimination and the impacts of social, structural, and health inequities including BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities. The member will have access to the clients for the duration of their time serving on this project, in-person during legal clinic hours and at community events and via phone and video conferencing.
  • Provide screening and intake of the client/patients for our MLPs.
  • Provide data collection and analyzing for trends and impact of our services. 
  • Member will have the flexibility to work with their supervisor to tailor many activities to their specific area of interest to ensure they have a fulfilling, meaningful, and impactful experience.

Knowledge Required for the Position

  • Knowledge of AmeriCorps/Health Corps member requirements
  • Skill with Microsoft Office or other software for a variety of data processing operations involving a range of problem solving, record keeping, correspondence, and service tracking options.

Supervision

  • The supervisor assigns service activities, advises on changes in procedures, and is available for assistance when required
  • The supervisor will meet regularly with the member to review progress on program goals. 

Review

  • Completed projects are reviewed very generally to determine that objectives have been met and are in compliance with policies and regulations.
  • Supervisor will provide regular feedback through weekly one on one meetings. 

Guidelines

  • Guidelines are generally applicable, but the member independently makes adaptations in dealing with problems and unusual situations

Complexity

  • Member has to develop, analyze, or evaluate information before the service position can progress

Special Considerations

  • Unusual service hours, involving evenings, weekends, or long shifts
  • This position provides for the member to serve on some weekends or evenings (typically once per month)

  • The member is required to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 or eligible for a waiver.
