A New Outlook on Public Health Education at Home

Posted on: September 15, 2016Chicago

Hello! My name is Robin Kanemoto and I am a recent graduate of Beloit College with a major in Health and Society and a minor in Studio Art. As a native Chicagoan I am very excited to be serving those in my hometown within the coming months. Earlier this summer, I volunteered as a Global Impact Fellow with Unite For Sight in Chennai, India where I assisted the partner eye clinic in various aspects of eye care including distributing eyeglasses, documenting patient history, and coordinating patient surgeries provided by local ophthalmologists. During the summer of 2015, I interned for a non-profit agency dedicated to providing education, healthcare and workforce development to immigrants and refugees within and surrounding the Chicago Uptown neighborhood.

Through the Erie Family Health Center position at Amundsen high school, I look forward to applying my previous experience working with underserved populations in Chicago and abroad. I hope to develop a better understanding of the health disparities and barriers to healthcare that families regularly encounter within my immediate neighborhood. By working with students, and thus their families, I hope to gain a greater insight on the health services and programs that are currently available and the health care initiatives that have yet to be implemented.
