Humans of NHC: Ravina Sidhu

“In the future, I hope to be able to call myself a successful Neuropsychologist. The moment I realized this was my dream profession was when I was with a family member, and they were suffering from what we call an “episode”. The left side of their body goes numb, their neck gets stiff, a migraine begins, their speech is severely impeded, and their blood pressure spikes up to dangerous levels. Though this could be called a stroke, doctors have ruled out that it isn’t. During this episode, I was worried about this person, but I found myself more interested in the cause of the situation and how something like this could be happening. At that moment, I knew that neuroscience was my calling. I knew that I wanted to dive deeper into brain functions and what causes disorders in individuals based on biology, psychology, etc.

Though we know a lot about the brain, there is still so much more to learn and discover. I want to be a part of big discoveries, but most importantly, I want to give back to those suffering from brain disorders the way my loved one unfortunately is. I hope to care for and treat a wide variety of patients with brain issues and contribute to their health and well-being. Someone that inspires me is my previous manager from my second job. Risa is one of the strongest, kindest, and most golden-hearted souls I have ever had the pleasure of coming across. She’s inspiring to me because she shows up with her best foot forward every day. The day might be stressful, and everything in the world could be going wrong but Risa chooses to tackle those issues with positivity and grace. Because of her, I feel like she has been able to coach me on how to be the best version of myself. She sees strengths in everyone, and she builds people’s confidence with her words and actions of acknowledgment. Through a harder time in my life, Risa was there for me as a manager, but most importantly, a friend. I can’t thank her enough for how she’s accepted me for who I am and has taught me how to live an authentic, and happy life.” – Ravina Sidhu, a NHC Central California member. #HumansofNHC #NHCCentralCalifornia #AmeriCorps #ApplyNow
