Community, Health, and Breaking Barriers - Meet Atiya!

Posted on: January 23, 2020Chicago

Hi! My name is Atiya and I recently graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelors in Science in Human Nutrition and a Spanish minor. While I am not exactly looking forward to the harsh Chicago winter, I can't wait to explore the city, eat good food, and spend time by the lake!

During undergrad, I spent time working with free clinics, nonprofits, and the refugee population in Columbus, Ohio. My experiences have taught me a lot about working with disadvantaged populations, sparked my interest in public health, and shaped my career goals: working with underserved communities to increase access to healthcare and closing the many disparities that exist.

I am excited to move to Chicago and serve with NHC Chicago and the Illinois Eye Institute and Diabetes Eye Care Center this year. I hope to not only gain experience serving this new and diverse community, but also to learn more about eye health and the impacts that social factors can have on health. I hope I can have a positive impact on the community and leave this year with the skills and tools to work toward improving our current system.
