NHC Program: NHC Pittsburgh
Host Site: UPMC Shadyside Family Health Center (SHY FHC)
Position Title: Maternal Child Health Care Coordinator
Where are you from? Cary, NC
Why did you decide to join NHC?
Before starting medical school, I wanted to take a gap year that aligned with my passion for service. National Health Corps was the perfect opportunity to gain hands-on experience while directly connecting with the local community. I believe that this opportunity will help me broaden my healthcare experience and develop leadership skills as I learn to advocate for those who are not in a position to advocate for themselves.
What are you hoping to gain or learn during your service term?
I hope to not only have a more holistic understanding about population health but to also create meaningful relationships with members of the community. I hope to learn from their stories and experiences as I develop more confidence in my interpersonal and communication skills.
What are you most looking forward to during your service term?
I look forward to creating a positive impact on the Pittsburgh community and creating lifelong friendships, from my cohort to my SHY FHC family. I hope I can look back at my service year and say that I did something that excited and challenged me every day.
