Hi! My name is Natalie Berman and I will be serving as a Health Educator at Erie Family Health Center in Lake View High School. I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in May 2017, with a BS in Interdisciplinary Health. After graduation I decided to do a service year, and served with an AmeriCorps program called City Year. City Year works with students who are at risk of not graduating high school, focusing on academics, behavior and attendance. Similar to National Health Corps, City Year requires 1700 hours of service over a 10 month period. I served in a freshmen level computer science class, and provided more than 14,000 minutes of individual and group tutoring in math to my students.
Towards the end of my service term with City Year, I realized I wanted to do another year of service, this time with a focus on health education. I am thrilled not only to continue my passion of service towards a cause greater than myself, but also to return to a health educator role. In college I worked as a sex educator in middle schools and taught rape prevention courses on my campus. I am so excited to continue my role as a sex educator this year, while also gaining skills and knowledge in other areas of health education, such as mental health, nutrition, and working in a health center. In my free time I enjoy cooking, reading, playing with dogs, and spending time with my roommates. I can't wait for this year to begin!
