NHC Members and Staff Learn About Structural Racism
As preparation for the launch of the 2021-2023 NHC Strategic Plan, which is heavily focused on equity and justice issues, NHC members and staff devoted several days to learning about structural racism through an intersectional lens with sessions facilitated by experts in the field. Topics included the historical and sociopolitical roots of structural racism, how law has been used to subjugate the voices of marginalized people, the racial and gendered dimensions of policing and mass incarceration, and racism across public health systems.
NHC members have ample opportunities throughout their service terms to reflect on the impact of racism and other forms of oppression on health service systems and health outcomes, and all member positions will be required to make focused efforts to address structural oppression beginning in 2021.
