What is your title and role at your host site?
As Community Outreach Coordinator at the Center for Opioid Recovery, I lead our Community Linkage Program in which I recruit new service partners in areas of need, such as housing, employment, education, and transportation. In addition to recruitment, I manage a data bank to organize community resources, and I educate staff about these relationships. I also assist with case management and facilitate warm-handoffs between our patients and non-healthcare agencies.
Why did you join AmeriCorps/National Health Corps?
I joined the National Health Corps because it fit perfectly with my passion for service and desire to gain hands-on public health experience. I knew NHC would provide a unique opportunity for me to spend a year of direct service in a clinical setting, and I look forward to learning from both patients and providers on where our healthcare system is falling short, and how I can use that knowledge to make a meaningful difference in my community.
What are you hoping to gain from your year of service?
I am hoping to gain experience advocating for patients and navigating community resources for vulnerable populations. Additionally, I am hoping to gain a deeper understanding of our healthcare system and how I can contribute to making my community a more inclusive, equitable place for all.
What are your plans after AmeriCorps service? I have not yet figured that out! I am currently in the process of applying to MSW, MPH, and M.Ed. programs and I hope this year will help clarify which direction I want to go.
Where do you envision yourself in 5 years?
I envision myself surrounded by people I love and in a profession where I can continue advocating for all individuals to have the resources they need to live healthy, happy lives.
