Position Title: Patient Advocate and Navigator
Where are you from?
Round Rock, Texas
Why did you decide to join NHC?
Instead of immediately applying to and attending medical school following my bachelor's degree, I wanted to take a year to serve my community and learn how to effectively use public health initiatives to alleviate healthcare barriers in underserved communities. This would offer me the benefit of increasing my patient and clinical care experiences and develop my awareness of socioeconomic factors that prevent healthcare.
What are you hoping to gain or learn during your service term?
I hope to learn how to effectively use public health initiatives to alleviate healthcare barriers in underserved communities. Additionally, I hope to learn more about how healthcare works beyond doctor-patient interactions, particularly with respect to health insurance. I hope to learn how to treat patients from a wide variety of backgrounds and develop cultural awareness for how healthcare is viewed and administered in different cultures. Finally, I hope to gain personal and professional growth and lifelong friends!
What are you most looking forward to during your service term?
During my service term, I am most looking forward to gaining experience working in medically underserved communities and being a part of a group of healthcare professionals seeking to remedy disparities in healthcare while also growing and developing my own unique view of medicine.
